Today the Drug Enforcement Agency accepted the Department of Health and Human Services’ recommendation to move cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule III.
This historic decision, once finalized, will remove cannabis from its listing as a strictly prohibited drug with no known medical value and a significant potential for abuse.
While this does not equate to federal legalization, a Schedule III categorization acknowledges that cannabis has currently accepted medical use in the US and a potential for abuse less than substances in Schedules I & II; substances such as heroin, cocaine, meth-amphetamine and fentanyl.
This decision rights a wrong.
This decision removes from stigma all of the people who partner with this plant as medicine.
This decision opens the doors to increased scientific research.
This decision will alleviate some of the regulatory and financial burdens placed on licensed businesses.
This decision is a further step in repairing the harm caused by decades of prohibition.
